You copy a chunk of SQL on your Mac, roll your chair over to the Windows machine, hit Ctrl+V — and get whatever was sitting in that PC's clipboard from an hour ago. If you want to share your clipboard between a Mac and a Windows PC, there's no switch to flip: the two operating systems keep entirely separate clipboards, and neither one knows the other exists.

The good news is that there are several ways to bridge them, and they're genuinely different from each other. Here's what actually works, what each approach costs you, and where every one of them still leaves a gap.

Why There's No Built-In Way to Do This

Both platforms have a cross-device clipboard story — they just don't include each other.

  • Apple's Universal Control lets one keyboard and mouse drive a Mac and an iPad, and the clipboard travels with you. It works between Apple devices only. A Windows PC isn't invited.
  • Windows cloud clipboard syncs your Win+V history across machines when you sign in with a Microsoft account and turn on sync. It's Windows-to-Windows.
  • macOS 26 Tahoe finally added a built-in clipboard history in Spotlight (⌘Space, then ⌘4). Handy, but items expire after roughly eight hours, can't be organized, and never leave that one Mac.

So the clipboard bridge you want has to be built from something else. There are three realistic routes.

Option 1: Software KVM (Best for Two Machines on One Desk)

If the Mac and the PC sit side by side, a software KVM is the closest thing to a real shared clipboard. You move your cursor off the edge of one screen and it appears on the other — same keyboard, same mouse, and copy-paste carries across.

The main choices:

  • Input Leap — free and open source, the community-maintained continuation of Barrier (which itself forked from Synergy). Runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
  • Synergy — the commercial option, paid, with an easier setup process and support.

What you get: one cursor across both machines, plus text on the clipboard shared in both directions. It feels close to native.

Where it breaks down: setup involves IP addresses, screen layouts, and firewall permissions. macOS also requires granting Accessibility and Input Monitoring permissions, which trips people up. Text sharing is reliable; images and files are inconsistent to nonexistent depending on version and platform pair. And both machines must be on the same local network, awake, and running the app.

Option 2: Remote Desktop (Best When One Machine Is Elsewhere)

Every mainstream remote desktop tool shares the clipboard between the host and the client — that's a core feature, not an add-on.

  • Microsoft Remote Desktop for connecting a Mac to a Windows PC
  • Chrome Remote Desktop, which is free and works both directions through the browser
  • Parsec, AnyDesk, or TeamViewer for lower-latency or cross-platform sessions

Copy on one side, paste on the other, and it just works — usually for text, sometimes for files, depending on the tool and its settings.

Where it breaks down: you're not using two computers side by side anymore, you're looking at one through a window into the other. That's great when the PC is in another room or another building, and awkward when it's eighteen inches to your left. Clipboard sharing also silently stops working more often than you'd like — a reconnect usually fixes it.

Option 3: A Shared Destination (Lowest Friction, Least Elegant)

The oldest trick, and the one most people fall back on: put the content somewhere both machines can reach.

  • A notes app with clients on both platforms — paste in on one side, copy out on the other.
  • A shared cloud folder for anything file-shaped.
  • Messaging yourself in Slack, Telegram, or WhatsApp Web.
  • A self-hosted or third-party clipboard sync service, if you want something purpose-built.

What you get: zero networking setup and it works from anywhere, not just the same room.

Where it breaks down: it's manual. You're not sharing a clipboard, you're doing a two-step relay every single time. And it deserves saying plainly: everything you route through a cloud service is a copy of your data sitting on someone else's server. The Problem None of These Actually Solve

Pick any option above and you've moved one item from one machine to another. That's it.

The reason cross-machine copy-paste feels so painful isn't really the gap between macOS and Windows. It's that each side only holds one thing at a time. You bridge the two clipboards, copy three items in a row, and two of them are gone before you've pasted anything. The bridge faithfully transmits your latest copy and quietly drops everything before it.

Which means the real fix is two layers, not one:

  1. A bridge between the machines — a KVM, remote desktop, or a shared destination.
  2. A history on the side where you do most of your copying, so nothing gets overwritten while you work.
